Changed the database type to MySQL Internal, added the folder containing my data and left digikam running. Deleted the database and started digikam. If there are many client programs sending SQL to the same database over a network, then use a client/server database engine instead of SQLite. digiKam supports the exif data in png files, whereas (currently) for tiff.
